Все знают, что a handbag — дамская сумка, сумочка. Самая знаменитая сумочка принадлежала бывшему британскому премьеру Маргарет Тэтчер. Она якобы использовала её в качестве инструмента для политического убеждения. От этого слова образовался глагол to handbag someone, т. е. заставить кого-либо прекратить сопротивление самым естественным и эффективным способом — насилием. Говорили, что политические противники Маргарет Тэтчер покорились её воле после того, как она поколотила их сумкой. To handbag стало очень популярным выражением в британской прессе в 1980-х гг. после резких тэтчеровских протестов на собраниях ЕС, а также её разногласий со своими министрами. Вот что сообщила газета 'The Independent' в 1987 г.:

'No-one crosses Margaret Thatcher and gets away with it. And no-one is too grand to escape the process of handbagging, which has been refined to an art under her premiership'. — «Никому не сходит с рук идти наперекор Маргарет Тэтчер. И ни один человек, даже самый высокопоставленный, не смог бы избежать убеждения силой, которое совершенствовалось за время её пребывания на посту премьер-министра».
